According to a Corporation source, these devices will replace the outdated handheld devices. The civic body had introduced handheld devices five years ago. These were similar to the ones bus conductors have.

“The handheld devices had replaced manually filled-in receipts and the POS ones will replace the handheld devices. We have procured updated POS devices that have a touch screen instead of normal devices usually found in shops,” the source said. The source added that from now on, residents can pay their property tax using credit and debit cards. The civic body had already introduced property tax payment in banks, e-seva centres, mobile applications and through the online mode apart from payment at counters.

Corpn partners with private bank for tax collection
The Greater Chennai Corporation has partnered with a private bank to implement a cashless tax payment system in the city, sources in the corporation said.
An official said that there are more than 200 tax collectors in the city and each of them will be provided with POS devices. “Distribution of the devices started on Monday. However, the new devices faced glitches on the first day due to connectivity issues and it is being sorted out,” the official said.
While the civic body is trying out various initiatives to increase the tax collection, sources in the civic body said that they are short-staffed. “Even though the city limit was increased, the number of tax collector postings are maintained at 276. Now, there are only around 220 tax collectors. Each tax collectors have to cover more than 10,000 bills per year, which is a burden,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Corporation collected Rs 91.50 crore from April 1 to May 6. During 2018-2019, the civic body had collected Rs 1,002 crore and fixed a target of Rs 1,350 crore for the current fiscal.
