    The Greater Chennai Corporation has constituted a steering committee to increase the admission in the Greater Chennai Corporation-run schools and to upgrade teaching process.

    The committee comprises of education officer, additional education officer, assistant education officer and headmasters. Corporation Commissioner G Prakash formed the committee during a meeting held at Ripon Buildings on Friday. “The steering committee will advise the civic body to increase the quality of education provided in the Chennai Corporation schools,” G Prakash said in the meeting.


    He added that the changes in the teaching methods should be brought in order to adapt to the changing trends in education and to instil new ideas. “Learning capacity of the students should be increased so that the students could clear competitive exams.” Presently the civic body is maintaining 281 schools, including 211 primary and middle schools, 70 high schools and higher secondary schools. As many as 83,619 students are studying in those schools.


    According to a Corporation statement, the civic body is providing scholarship to students who pass Class 12 public exam. “The schools have lab facilities, libraries, computers apart from providing vocational training to students,” the release added.


    In the recently concluded Class 10 public exam, schools run by the civic body had recorded a pass percentage of 92.44 per cent with 21 high schools registering 100 per cent pass. Meanwhile, in the Class 12 public exam, 32 higher secondary schools run by the civic body had registered 90.41 per cent pass. Four of the 32 schools registered 100 per cent pass.
