It is noteworthy that the students, who are the residents of as many as five shelters for children here, studied in Corporation schools as well as government-aided schools.

Among the 21 students who appeared for the examination, J Priya, a resident of a children’s shelter in Kodungaiyur, secured the highest with a total of 430 on 500.

“My parents left me seven years ago and I have been staying in the shelter since then. I don’t know where my parents are now,” she said. She added that she would pursue higher studies based on the advice the shelter caretaker.

Similarly, the Class XII results saw six of seven students staying in such homeless shelters in the city clearing the board examination, and G Jeeva securing 432 marks on 600 to be the topper.

Commenting on the performance, a Corporation official said that while homeless persons are usually taken care of for a period of up to a year, the children are taken care of until their completion of Class XII.

The official added that not all the children are enrolled in Corporation schools and that the decision is rather based on the proximity of the school from the shelter.
