According to the police, the victim was walking on the road when two men on bike came near her and snatched her two-sovereign chain. As she called for help, members of the public and some two-wheeler riders chased the suspects and nabbed one of them. The other man managed to escape from the scene on his bike.
After bashing him up, the public handed him over to the police. The police later identified the man as Prakash from Manampathy in neighbouring Kancheepuram district.
The Pazhavanthangal police, after conducting an inquiry with the suspect, said that he was in jail till recently in connection with a murder case. After coming out on bail a few days ago, he was apparently finding it difficult to meet the expenses for the case. So, he decided to try chain snatching hoping to get some money, the police said. The police recovered the two-sovereign gold chain from the suspect. “We are no looking for his associate who managed to escape from the scene,” the police added.
