The new government shouldn’t dictate and divide people

I always wanted a politician who believes in tolerance and plurality that define what this country is all about. He should serve all citizens and not just the rich. He/she shouldn’t make a mockery of the agrarian crisis but heed to the farmer’s voice. The elected politicians shouldn’t puncture the economy and use democratic institutions against the poor and voiceless. A democratically elected government shouldn’t treat citizens as ‘subjects’ and dictate what to eat, what to speak, what to wear, whom to love and divide people on the basis of faith.

Looking for an ‘Indian’ as our leader

I am hoping to see a leader who will be able to look at India as a single entity rather than regionalising it according to caste, language, etc. The leader should think like an Indian and not separate them from the rest. He/she should be able to work for the welfare of the country. I really hope that this Lok Sabha election is a golden chance for us to choose a good Indian as our leader.

New environmental policies, need of the hour

Though the past couple of years witnessed many drastic climate changes in various states in India, none of the major political parties has highlighted environmental conservation and climate change in manifestos. Having said that, a couple of new parties and politicians have come forward to support the cause. I hope the newly-elected government will come up with new environmental policies.

Politics should be inclusive, tolerant and secular

For me, the most important agenda is inclusive politics — a politics that is gender inclusive, religion inclusive (be it religious or a-religious), geography inclusive and language inclusive. Inclusivity in politics is something that affects me personally and politically because I wanted to live in a country that is inclusive for my brothers and sisters and gender non- binaries. Moreover,  today’s youth is looking for more inclusive, tolerant and secular politics. Well, it has been a long time since we saw a mature politician and I miss those days when we could quote a politician (their quotes used to be beautifully worded). I expect an adult, who is in a responsible position, to behave in a certain way. But sadly, a lot of modern day political discourse is juvenile.

The politician of my dreams should be able to innovate

The qualities I would look for in a leader would be, first and foremost, honesty and integrity, following which, good communication, accountability, and creativity and innovation. Once a new government takes charge, I hope they will simplify the GST slabs, increase support for women entrepreneurs, improve basic infrastructure and revamp our education system.
