“He came to Chennai with a Lithuanian woman, introduced her as his wife and told his mother that he needed money and sought to sell a few properties.

Though the family was not happy with his marriage or the demand for financial help, Rathinam managed to give Rs 1 crore to him. However, he returned in March seeking more money, which led to a quarrel between the mother and the son,” the police said.

Rathinam informed her daughter Sudha about the money and went to stay with her  in Tirupur as Praveen often fought with her.

When she returned to the city on Sunday, Praveen came to the house in the evening. After an argument, he strangulated her with electrical wires and stabbed her. In the statement given to the police, neighbours’ said that they heard him shouting at Rathinam and they went silent after a while.

The police, based on the post mortem reports, said that Praveen might have stabbed and tied her legs and hands after the murder to make it look like murder for gain.

While the number of special teams to nab him has been increased to six from three on Monday, the police suspect that he might not have travelled far and could be hiding in the area.
