Chennai
The ward had 1,538 admissions in 2018, while 747 deaths were reported due to burns at the Kilpauk Medical College. Considering the large number of patients at the hospital and to maintain a registry of the burn cases in the city and other adjacent districts, the burns ward at the hospital was decided to be upgraded as part of a new project by National Health Mission.
The construction works of operation theatre, ICU and the passage connecting the adjacent new building has already been started after Rs 5 crores was allotted. The equipment and furniture would be set up at a cost of Rs 4.89 crore, while the burns registry would be maintained with computerised accessories at a cost of Rs 13.12 lakhs.
“The upgrade will help in maintaining individual cabins to avoid infections, as the chances of infections are very high in the case of burns,” said Dr P Vasanthamani, dean, KMC. She added that having a specific intensive unit would help them follow the one-to-one treatment procedure of patients in the ward.
The Public Works Department is undertaking the civil works at the hospital to construct a new building for the extensive burns ward. A Public Works Department official said that the construction of the building would be completed bynext year.
