Pawsome pets: Help save a stray this summer
The summer is slowly setting in and mercury is rising. Stray animals and birds frequently suffer from dehydration, or even face death in some cases, so here are a few things you can do to help them beat the heat.
Chennai
Supervised baths with care
If you’re volunteering at an animal shelter in the city, helping the staff bathe the animals under supervision is a wise option. The cool water can provide some relief from the heat but ensure to thoroughly dry the animal before letting them goÂ
Providing shelter
This is probably the simplest thing anyone can do. Either create a makeshift shelter for stray animals that are looking to rest for a bit within your building’s premises or allow them to cool off under the shade of existing plants or trees. Always check if an animal is sleeping under your vehicle before turning on the ignition
Bird feeders
Isn’t this idea adorable? Turning a coconut shell into a bird feeder, or purchasing a readymade one and filling it up with grains (ask a veterinarian first), could save many birds from collapsing of hunger and exhaustion
Water bowls
For many years now, residents across the city have been sponsoring for, or collecting water bowls from animal shelters. Fixing a bowl on your street and filling it with clean water every day can help many creatures big or small quench their thirst
Offer cooling food
Check with a doctor about the kinds of food an animal can consume during the summer if you’d like to feed them. Watermelon, cucumber and coconut water or buttermilk are great optionsÂ
