The accused were identified as Vignesh and Alagesan. The deceased, Surya, had helped Hemalatha and Karthik, who were in a relationship, get married last week. While Vignesh was identified as Hemalatha’s brother, Alagesan is her uncle, the police said.

Inquiries revealed that Karthik’s brother, who was also unhappy about the marriage, went to Surya’s house and took him to Meleripakkam where he had already invited Hemalatha’s family members and they, together, murdered Surya.

The police said families of Hemalatha and Karthik were against their relationship. After Hemalatha went missing for two days, the family members were searching for her.

When they came to know that she got married with the help of Surya, Alagesan and few other relatives went to Surya's house on Sunday and threatened to kill him.

On Monday morning, villagers found him dead on the Meleripakkam lake bed. The police said Hemalatha and Karthik were from thesame caste.
