Corpn extends pvt conservancy to 3 zones
With the contract to remove garbage from Kodambakkam, Teynampet and Adyar zones coming to an end on March 31, the Greater Chennai Corporation has sent a proposal to the State government to take steps to replace the private firm.

In January, the civic body had sent the proposal to the State government and TN Infrastructure Development Board (TNIDB) seeking approvals to invite private firms to carry out the works.
“However, due to the election, we have extended Ramky Enviro Engineers’ operation for six months,” a Corporation official said.
He said the tender process would begin after the withdrawal of code of conduct. “We have prepared a Detailed Project Report and will submit it to TNIDB.”
The development came after the Corporation floated tenders in two packages to privatise conservancy works in eight zones – Tiruvottiyur, Manali, Madhavaram, Ambattur, Valasaravakkam, Alandur, Perungudi and Sholinganallur. Though one package containing Valasaravakkam, Alandur, Perungudi and Sholinganallur zones elicited some response, re-tender for the third time has been floated for the other one. It is expected to be opened after polls.
The official said that they have modified the payment method in order to prevent misconduct such as mixing of construction debris, market waste and road dust with municipal solid waste to increase the weight transported to the dumping sites.
“Currently, we are paying the private firm based on the weight of the waste they dump at the dump sites. To overcome such drawbacks, private firms should quote the bid amount per annum for removing garbage. We will evaluate the performance of the firms based on Key Performance Indicators, same as the other packages for the eight other zones,” the official added.
