Cash, gold and diamonds worth crores seized by election flying squad

The Anna Salai police seized 2.5 kg gold biscuits and other valuables from two men without proper documents and handed them over to flying squad official Thirunavukkarasu. According to the police, they intercepted a van near the clock tower in Royapettah around 11 pm.

The two persons in the van, Pramodkumar and Rajiv Patel of Seven Wells, claimed that the van belonged to a courier firm and they were on the way to the Chennai airport. But the police on checking the van found Rs 100 notes in bulk apart from valuables, including gold biscuits weighing more than 2.5 kg.

Six small-sized diamonds, a pair of diamond earrings, five panchalokha idols each weighing about 40 grams, 30 iPhones, seven cameras, seven watches including Rolex and iWatches were also seized from the van.

Similarly, Rs 1.80 crore cash was seized from a duo at Sholinganallur as they didn’t have valid documents required to transport the amount. Though the two men claimed that they represent a private agency entrusted to replenish cash in ATMs of a private bank and the cash was meant for the same, it was seized and sent to treasury as they didn’t have any documents to support their claim. In T Nagar, Rs 9.69 lakh was seized without valid documents though the men in possession of the cash claimed that it belonged to a textile showroom. The flying squads in Nungambakkam and Marina too seized Rs 85,000 and Rs 96,000 respectively.

In Choolaimedu, the police along with flying squad officials seized diamond jewels worth Rs 13 crore. However, they were returned after the owners produced documents stating that the jewels were brought to Chennai from Delhi for an expo.
