When they were returning home after night duty, traffic police personnel attached to Flower Bazaar police station noticed the men moving in a suspicious manner on Wall Tax road. They alerted their counterparts in the Law and Order wing.
A team of personnel rushed to the spot and secured them for interrogation. When they frisked the men, police found they were carrying cash underneath their shirts. In all, they were carrying Rs 1.36 crore in Rs 2,000 and Rs 500 denominations. The money was seized, police said.
Though the men, identified as Srinivasalu, Anjaneyalu, Sheik Salim and Basha from Vijayawada, claimed that they brought the cash to buy gold for the jewellery shop in their home town, the cash was seized as there were no proper documents to support their claim.
“They claimed that they were sent by their bosses, jewel shop owners, by a private bus and that they had kept the cash in such a manner to avoid being robbed or stolen,” said police.
Police suspect that it could be unaccounted money that was to be used to buy gold without paying tax. The men and the seized cash were handed over to Income Tax department for further investigation.
