File report on upkeep of crematoriums in city: HC

A division bench comprising Justice S Manikumar and Justice Subramonium Prasad, before whom a plea seeking to restore or relocate the existing crematorium at Mancholai Street, Ekkaduthangal came up, directed the official to provide details of the number of staff engaged in such burial/crematorium and category-wise details of the amount spent on repair and maintenance of these facilities.

The petitioner had sought for a direction to either restore or relocate the existing crematorium at Ekkaduthangal, by providing basic sanitary and hygienic disbursement of water through drains, and release hazardous gas emissions, arising out of burning human corpses, at maximum height so that people in the neighbourhood are not affected by it.

Following a suggestion to the petitioner during the earlier hearing that the Local Area Development Fund can also be utilised for the upkeep of burial grounds, the petitioner had agreed to implead the concerned MLA as a party in the writ petition. The plea is coming up on March 18 for further hearing when the Corporation official is scheduled to submit the report.
