The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is planning to replace the existing electric meters with smart meters at all Phase 1 Metro rail stations at a cost of Rs 75 lakh.

The smart meters are part of the advanced metering infrastructure solution to enhance the accurate measurement of consumption. According to the officials, 1,900 units are consumed by an elevated station on an average, while the consumption of the underground station is about 3,500 units.
“The project will be completed before July end. It will facilitate two-way communication, enabling feedback between the customers and the power suppliers. This will be replicated in the Phase 2 of the Metro rail,” said a CMRL official.
A train generates 1,900 KWH of electricity through traction system per day which are consumed by rolling stocks in the same electrical section. The remaining is fed back to the CMRL network. “The project is being implemented according to government’s vision of replacing all the existing meters with the smart meters in the next three years,” said the official.
The Metro rail already saves around 34 per cent of its total cost towards electricity, said an official. Around 14,000 units of electrical energy is generated every day from the roof mounted solar panels that has an installed capacity of 3.620 MW. “We will install another 4 MW of solar panels soon. This will generate an additional 16,000 units of electricity daily,” an official added.
