Blood transfusion row: HIV test to be done on girl child
The blood sample of the girl child born to the woman who was allegedly administered HIV infected blood at Sattur government hospital has been dispatched for testing at Government Rajaji General Hospital, Madurai. The sample was sent for HIV screening on March 4 and the results of the test would be given after 30 days, said hospital dean Dr K Vanitha, adding that it would be kept confidential.

Doctors at the hospital said that the child was put on preventive prophylactic medication for six weeks after birth. At the time of birth, the hospital authorities said that the HIV test would be performed after 45 days from then. The sample was collected on March 4 and sent for Polymerase Chain Reaction test to check for HIV infection.
“There will be two more similar tests done for the child, once at the age of six months and another a year after that. The baby and the mother are doing well, and are under constant supervision. The girl child weighed 1.75 kg when born and her weight has increased to 2.8 kg now. However, we are not planning to discharge them as of now,” added Dr Vanitha.
Doctors said that the mother was kept on antiretroviral (ART) medications soon after she was found to be HIV positive. The medications can prevent the transmission of the virus to the child. However, the probability of the child being infected with HIV depends on the viral load. The woman is under supervision at Rajaji Government General Hospital since December 27, 2018.
The woman underwent blood transfusion at Sattur government hospital on December 3 after she was found to be anaemic. It was later found that the blood was donated by a 19-year-old HIV positive person.
