City could face crisis as Krishna supply stops

Dealing a big blow to the city, the supply of Krishna river water was stopped after the storage at Kandaleru reservoir in Andhra Pradesh went below the minimum on Thursday. The water managers here had placed their hopes on supply under the scheme after the failure of northeast monsoon, which brought in only 50 per cent of the normal rain.

On Friday, the inflow was merely 45 cubic per second (cusecs). “Currently, the water is flowing due to the gravitational force which will take considerable time to reach Poondi reservoir. There is little to no possibility for the city to receive any more water from the Kandaleru reservoir in the coming days,” said the official.

This year, the supply has been an abysmal 0.4 thousand million cubic (TMC) feet water so far. “Since last June till now, the city had received only 2.2 TMC of water from Krishna,” theofficial added.

The storage at Kandaleru on Friday was only 7.39 TMC, much below its minimum drawdown level (the minimum water that has to be kept in the reservoir) of 8.42 TMC. The other two reservoirs part of the Krishna project, Srisailam reservoir andSomasila had 48.99 TMC and11.95 TMC respectively.

Once it is released from Kandaleru reservoir, the water travels along a 25 km long canal to reach the Poondi reservoir, from where it is send to meet the city’s drinking water supply. On Wednesday, the storage in Poondi reservoir stood at 477 mcft, less than a quarter of the 2,011 mcft that it had on the same day last year.
