Two held under Pocso Act in separate cases

The Tiruvanmiyur all-women police arrested a 44-year-old man for molesting a girl, who was his neighbour. The accused, S Selvam of Besant Nagar, is a house painter. The victim’s parents are daily wage labourers and usually come home late after work, said the police. “Around 8 pm on Monday, Selvam lured the 11-year-old girl, a Class 6 student, in the guise of giving her money to go to a nearby shop and molested her. Hearing her cries for help, neighbours rescued the girl,” said the police.

Selvam was beaten up and then handed over to the police. The Tiruvanmiyur all-women police registered a case and remanded him under the Pocso Act.

In another incident, Royapuram all-woman police arrested a 34-year-old man for entering a relative’s house and molesting a girl when she was asleep. The accused, E Senthil of Kasimedu, was also remanded in judicial custody under Pocso Act. The victim, a 14-year-old girl, is a relative of Senthil. He also promised to buy her a mobile phone, said the police. Senthil also has robbery and theft cases against him in Ponneri police station.

The police are on the lookout for a 28-year-old man, who went missing after allegedly raping a Class 12 girl promising to marry her,near Chengalpattu.

The accused, Boopathi of Konthandalam village near Chengalpattu, is an auto-rickshaw driver. He was in a relationship with a 17-year-old girl, who was his neighbour. The girl used to travel to the school in his auto.

On February 18, Boopathi had picked the girl from school but both returned home only the next day afternoon. The police said Boopathi had promised to marry the girl and raped her. Even though the girl’s family knew about the incident, they did not take any action as he had assured to marry her.

On February 19, the girl’s father noticed that Boopathi’s family had vacated the house and left the village overnight. Following this, he lodged a complaint with the Chengalpattu all-women police.

The police have detained Boopathi’s sister, a college student, staying at a hostel in Chengalpattu after inquiry. They are trying to locate the family by tracing their mobile phones.
