Krishna water dwindles, supply likely to end soon

Putting the water managers here in a quandary, the water level at Kandaleru reservoir in Andhra Pradesh has gone below the minimum level on Thursday, sparking fear that the Krishna water supply might come to an abrupt end. The minimum drawdown level (MDDL) at Kandaleru is 8.42 thousand million cubic (TMC) feet.

According to official data, the water level in Kandaleru reservoir on Thursday stood at 8.38 TMC – below the MDDL. Following this, top officials of Water Resources Department (WRD) of the PWD are apprehensive that water supply from the reservoir can come to an end in a matter of days.

“The water level has gone below the fixed level. Yet, we have requested them to continue the supply, which they can do by pumping and drawing water from their storage,” said a WRD official on Thursday. However, he added, the final decision rest with them.
“We cannot put pressure on them, as the water level in the other two reservoirs [Srisailam and Somasila] also look bleak. Only rain god should save us this time,” said the official. As on February 20, the storage in Srisailam reservoir was 51.871 TMC, while it was 15.02 TMC in Somasila reservoir.

The State had been receiving 325 cubic per second (cusecs) of water from the Kandaleru reservoir; since the beginning of water release on February 9, the total water supplied so far to Tamil Nadu is 0.25 TMC.

After being release from Kandaleru reservoir, Krishna water travels 25 km canal to reach Poondi reservoir in the outskirts of Chennai to augment the drinking water supply to the city. This share of water has become all the more significant this year due to the fast depleting storage at city reservoirs.

As per the agreement between the two States, Tamil Nadu has to receive 12 TMC a year, of which 8 TMC has to be supplied between July and October and the rest from January to April. The last year, however, only around five TMC of Krishna water was supplied to the city.
