Composting becomes easier with khamba in urban setting
Organic waste generated in urban centers is quite often mixed with toxic substances like plastic and other non-biodegradable substances.

This is dumped in large volumes into landfills, thus causing damage to the environment. Some Chennaiites have found a simple solution to tackle this issue with the help of a kambha (stack composter). This earthen device helps turn organic waste into harvest.
“A kambha is ideal if you have no or less space at home to convert organic waste into manure. One can choose the right composter according to the space they can make at home — even your balcony would do. It’s ideal for small families with 1-3 members,” said Shilpa Raghavan, a certified Animal Assisted Therapist, who bought a khamba in December. “It comes with a manual and the steps are quite simple and clear,” she added.
As for why she felt waste management at home was important, the youngster said, “It’s essential for each and every one to keep our environment clean and it cannot get easier than this.
At my home, we also collect dry plastics that can be recycled to lay out roads.” A method first tried by Rajagopalan Vasudevan, professor of chemistry at Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai, dry plastic waste mixed with hot tar can build better quality and long-lasting roads.
