Minor son taken for inquiry, beaten up by cops, alleges woman
A 35-year-old woman has written to State Human Rights Commission alleging that the Kolathur police secured her minor son mistaking him for an offender and beat him up at the police station.
Chennai
The incident happened on February 12 when the Class 10 boy visited a friend’s house in Sarojini Nagar. “When he was waiting outside the friend’s house, two men in plainclothes took him to Kolathur police station mistaking him for an offender and beat him up with a PVC pipe. He was later dropped at his grandparent’s house in Kolathur, while keeping me in the dark throughout,” the woman has alleged in her complaint.
The woman has said that she is a widow and her son’s studies are sponsored by well-wishers and added that his studies would be affected if they came to know about the incident.
She said that when she went to lodge a complaint at the Kolathur police station, inspector Prakash Kumar was not available and the other officers gave her evading answers.
When contacted, inspector Prakash Kumar denied beating up the boy. “He was not beaten up as alleged and there is no rule that parents should be informed unless the minor is detained for a long period. He was just brought to the police station for an inquiry and after it was confirmed that he was not an offender, police dropped him at grandparent’s place as per his wish. Where does the question of not informing the parents arise if he was dropped at home by the police,” said the inspector. The inspector added that the issue is blown out of proportion with an intention to prevent police from acting against crimes.
