In November, Karunanidhi Mathew (63) of Kamarajar Nagar, a retired government employee, came across a bride’s profile, named Radhika, on a popular matrimonial site which would be suitable for his son George Dindale, who is working in a water purifier firm. As the bride’s family was also interested, they exchanged phone numbers through the website.

Following this, Karunanidhi Mathew’s family met the girl’s family – father Giridhar, mother Usha and brother Rajesh – in Pallikaranai. The girl’s family also visited the groom’s house and fixed the betrothal on December 8. On December 6, the girl’s family came to Karunanidhi’s house and asked them to postpone the betrothal as they could not arrange money for the event. Believing them, Karunanidhi Mathew’s family gave them Rs 1 lakh. They also gave a bike to one of the relatives as he had to go somewhere urgently. However, the groom’s family could not get in touch with them after that.

After searching for them for the last three months but in vain, Karunanidhi realised that they have been cheated and lodged a complaint on Wednesday. A case has been registered and a hunt has been launched for the woman and her family members.
