The car from which the money was stolen belong to Fathima (40), of Neeladhirai street at Nainarkuppam in Panaiyur. As there was construction work going on at her house, she had parked the car in the garden opposite to her house. The spot was being managed by security guard Chinna Thambi (56) and his family. Fathima trusted Chinna Thambi as he had worked at her house earlier.

After the theft on January 27, Chinna Thambi’s sons – Chiranjeevi and Sundar – claimed that two men entered the garden claiming to be police personnel the previous night. The duo attacked them and threatened their family members, and robbed the cash from the car by breaking open the window panel, they had alleged.

After registering a case based on Fathima’s complaint, the police personnel who were suspicious of the brothers’ story interrogated Chiranjeevi and Sundar.

When they found Chiranjeevi’s replies to be contradictory, his call records were verified. After intense grilling sessions, he finally admitted to have stolen the cash with the help of his friends — Velu, Kumar and Muthuu of Soonambedu — without the knowledge of his family. The others were secured from Madhuranthagam and the stolen cash was seized. Further inquiry is on.
