Chennai
The arrested person was identified as L Sundar Raj (35) of Saidapet. The police noted that he has several robbery cases and also a murder case pending against him in Coimbatore.
Vijayakanth, a head constable attached to the Madipakkam police station, was patrolling in plainclothes near Dhandeeswaram Main Road in Velachery. Noticing Sundar Raj, Vijayakanth followed him as he could recognise the history-sheeter from CCTV footages.
Vijayakanth intercepted Sundar Raj while the latter was about to get into a car. Immediately, Sundar Raj suddenly took a pepper spray, used it on the policeman and began to run. While Vijayakanth shouted for help, the auto-rickshaw driver Mohanasundaram, who was passing by, came forward to help the police and both of them manage to catch Sundar Raj after a chase. Sundar Raj was arrested and taken to the Madipakkam police station. Sundar Raj had stolen the car and was using it for robbery. On Friday, Police Commissioner AK Viswanathan rewarded head constable and the autorickshaw driver and rewarded them for their brave act.
