The police said a popular coffee shop chain at Wallace Garden in Nungambakkam received a call around 6 pm on December 10. The caller identified himself as Mahesh, a doctor at Apollo Hospitals and placed an order for imported chocolates worth Rs 1.5 lakh. An employee of the shop went to the hospital on Greams Road with the chocolates. According to the staff, a man received the packet and took him inside the hospital in the guise of getting a cheque from the doctor.
The employee, who waited at the reception for a long time, approached the receptionist to inquire about the doctor as he did not receive the payment. To his shock, the receptionist told him that there was no such doctor working at the hospital. He alerted his boss J Mahendrakumar (45) of Sowcarpet and a complaint was lodged at the Thousand Lights police station on January 16. Police traced the suspects to Bengaluru with the help of the phone number used to make the call to the shop and secured G Irfan Ullah (30) and his wife Nabillah of Bangaluru.
The investigation revealed that Irfan was involved in similar offenses in Bengaluru. “Irfan used his wife’s SIM card to make calls, so she has also been secured. Irfan left for Bengaluru soon after receiving the chocolate and sold them in the market,” the investigating officer said.
