Chandrasekhar (50), who was the head constable at the Uthiramerur police station in November 2008, stopped Shankar (42) on a two-wheeler during a vehicle check-up. Chandrasekar seized the bike as Shankar didn’t have documents. He was asked to take the vehicle from the station after paying the fine.

After Shankar paid the fine and asked for the release of his vehicle the next day, Chandrasekhar asked him to pay Rs 5,000 more to release the bike. He reportedly threatened Shankar with a false case against him if he failed to pay the money.

Following that, Shankar informed Kancheepuram Vigilance officials and based on their guidance, he gave currency coated with phenolphthalein powder to Chandrasekhar. The cop was caught red-handed.

Vigilance sleuths registered a case and Chandrasekhar was suspended. Meanwhile, Chandrasekhar was transferred to the Arakonam police station as the head constable and even got a promotion while the case was in progress. On Wednesday, a judge pronounced Chandrasekhar guilty and sentenced him to three years imprisonment and another three years for accepting it. The judge also slapped Rs 10,000 fine on him.
