Start-up claims it can harness clean water from thin air
At a time when the city is staring at an acute water scarcity situation this summer owing to the failure of northeast monsoon, a city-based team has come up with an alternative of producing water from the thin air.

The start-up ‘Teertha’ launched a new device that utilises green technology to harness water from the atmosphere. The device works on a mechanism that condenses air to create the purest form of water. The purifier works on electricity with a consumption of 0.35 KV for generating a litre of water.
“Foreseeing an adverse water scarcity situation, we had developed this device a decade ago. This is a simple and clear solution to the huge problem of finding clean and healthy water,” said Durga Das, founder-CEO, Teertha.
“We have patented this technology and are working on a prototype that operates on solar energy. So far, we have 2,800 installations in the market. It promotes ecology and is sustainable over any period,” added Durga.
The ideal condition for this device to work at its optimal rate is at 40 degrees Celsius or above of humidity. “Low humidity and impure air reduce its efficiency. So far, we have made 2,800 installations in government offices, army and the railways. It saves an equivalent of 6 lakh litres of water per day,” said S Shivakumar, who developed the technology.
“It is capable of generating 30 litres water per day. It can supply water continuously without any hassles. This device has been designed in such a way that it can supply over 1,000 litres per day and therefore, it can be used for commercial purposes as well,” said Durga.
Regarding their target audience, she said, “We are not targeting any selective section of people. But, our customers are those who prioritise their children and family’s health, and those who believe healthy water contributes to a healthy life.”
The team is working on various prototypes, including how to operate the device on solar energy and bigger plants catering at a mass scale.
