The arrested persons were identified as Sivanesan, a resident of Velankanni, and Fahim, an Uttar Pradesh native from Mumbai.

Delivering the verdict on Friday, K Ayyappan, the Principal Special Judge, II Additional Special Court, Chennai, found the duo guilty and sentenced them to 10 years rigorous imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs 1 lakh each.

Acting on a tip off, DRI sleuths intercepted the duo when Fahim was travelling from Mumbai to hand over 4.08kg heroin to Sivanesan in Tamil Nadu on October 22, 2012. They were caught red handed when they were exchanging the contraband in a backpack at a suburban railway station.

Following this, the officials raided Sivanesan’s residence at Velankanni and recovered another 2 kg drug. Thereafter, the two were arrested under provisions of the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substance (NDPS) Act, 1985, and were remanded in judicial custody.

A statement from the DRI said it has been taking focused efforts to tackle narcotics trafficking.
