Gold smuggled in joysticks, 3 held
The Customs officers seized 9.8 kg gold worth Rs 3.3 crore from three air passengers, who arrived in Chennai from Sharjah and Kuala Lumpur on Sunday.

All the three – two from Sharjah and one from Kuala Lumpur – were allegedly carrying gold ingots hidden in PlayStation joysticks. Kamar Ali, who arrived from Kuala Lumpur, was carrying smuggled gold weighing 3.14 kg in 47 joysticks. Two other passengers, Riyas Khan and Ibrahim Shah, who arrived from Sharjah, were carrying 39 and 61 gold filled joysticks respectively with them. The Customs officers opened the joysticks and seized 2.6 kg gold from Riyas and 4 kg gold from Ibrahim Shah.Â
All the three passengers were also found carrying 120 grams of gold each in their pockets. Totally 9.8 kg gold valued nearly Rs 3.3 crore was seized from them. The three were arrested under provisions of the Customs Act. During the check, the official found the joysticks were unusually heavy and Customs team took the decision to break open the joysticks, said sources.
