“We have identified nearly 120 spots in the city where miscreants dump debris repeatedly. Most of the spots are located on the banks of the Cooum and Adyar rivers. Debris affect environment along the river banks,” a Corporationofficial said.
The official added that civic body had sought the help of the police to install CCTV cameras at the identified spots.
“The police have been installing CCTV cameras across the city and we requested them to add cameras near illegal dumping spots. The Corporation has given Rs 1.60 crore earned from auctioning off abandoned vehicles to the police for this,” the official said.
According to the Corporation data, the city is generating approximately 700 tonnes of construction waste as against 5,400 tonnes of garbage.
It is learnt that the Corporation is operating six debris recycling plants and the civic body is planning to build recycling plants in Perungudi and Kodungaiyur dumping yards. “Earlier, we had planned to set up a recycling plant in Pallikaranai where debris was dumped for years. Due to environmental reasons, we have cancelled the proposal and decided to build plants in landfills,” the official added.
As per Corporation rules, building owners should get demolition permission from the civic body and they should remove the construction waste safely.
