    Pongal holidays: SETC records 6.36 L Chennai passengers in four days

    Nearly 6.36 lakh persons travelled to various destinations from the city on 11,659 State Express Transport Corporation (SETC) buses in the past four days ahead of Pongal festival.

    SETC generated Rs 871.96 lakh through online ticket sales in the past three days.  “For the onward journey, 66,739 persons from the city booked online tickets and 41,301 tickets were booked from other districts. 

    For the return journey, 4,168 passengers booked tickets from the city and 70,217 tickets were booked from other districts,” a top official attached to SETC said.

    In order to ease the congestion, five boarding points, including Koyambedu bus terminus, Tambaram terminus, Tambaram (MEPZ) terminus, KK Nagar terminus and Madhavaram terminus, were set up.

    Buses heading towards Kancheepuram, Cheyyar, Arcot, Arani, Vellore, Tirupathur, Hosur and Dharmapuri were operated from Poonamallee bus stand. Similarly, buses going to Uthukottai, Kalahasthi, Tirupati, Nellore and Andhra Pradesh were operated from Madhavaram bus stand.

    In order to curb overcharging by owners of private buses, the Transport department took a slew of measures. “We had roped in authorities to monitor the situation round the clock,” said an official.
