Margazhi events should be year-long, say Rasikas
Bhavika Shankar doesn’t think of herself as a socially-active person, but the 33-year-old Rasika, based in Triplicane, has had the busiest month yet, having attended back-to-back kutcheris in the city in the month of Margazhi.

She confessed, “I only wish such recitals happened throughout the year rather than being contained to one month.”
As the festivities along the pond of Kapaleeswarar temple, Mylapore slowly dwindle, the throng of Rasikas biting into piping hot sambar vadas at Woodlands hotel outside Narada Gana Sabha, Alwarpet, grows thinner, the handful of infamous makeup artisans lay down their robust foundation kits and jam-packed lighting technicians take a breather as the month of Margazhi, the busiest season for Carnatic musicians and Bharatanatyam artistes, draws to a close.
Rasikas like Bhavika in the city, and thousands from other states, will have to wait another year to witness such performances. Going strong for almost ten decades now, the festival was launched in 1927 as an extension of a conference held by the Indian National Congress in Chennai - Madras then - but it severed ties with politics and became the much-awaited ‘Margazhi’ or ‘December’ season, and soon, the cultural identity of the city. Up and coming dancer Sai Vridhula, a disciple of Urmila Sathyanarayanan, who was recently awarded second place in the Talent Promotion Contest 2019 by Indian Fine Arts, said, “Sometimes, three of my favourite dancers perform on the same days. As an enthusiastic Rasika, I would love to watch all these performances and maybe that would happen if such opportunities were given to deserving dancers throughout the year rather than in just these two months.”
Ironically, the rental remains the same throughout the year, regardless the increased demand during Margazhi. A representative from The Music Academy said, “There is no special rate for Margazhi. The main hall is rented out for Rs 80,000 for four hours throughout the year. There is no trend of crowds increasing during Margazhi. The weekends attract a lot more people than weekdays.”
“I try not to miss Sanjay Subrahmanyam, Malavika Sarukkai, TN Krishnan’s performances, and plan my trip accordingly,” she said. “It would be great if such performances happened every weekend, if not every day of the year. I would like to visit the city other times of the year, so I can make travel abroad to celebrate New Year, but it’s always a clash,” she added.
An adminstrative member from Narada Gana Sabha, Alwarpet too, said the rent of the Sabha’s main stage for three hours is Rs 35,400 and the mini hall, located in the same venue, is Rs 7,800 - standard rates for any day of the year.
An administrative member of Kartik Fine Arts, a fine arts organisation which has been conducting Carnatic music, dance and drama shows for 44 years now shared that the cost of Sabhas have never affected scheduling of programs. Instead, he revealed, “There is an influx of rasikas from abroad and various parts of the country only during the months of December-January. The same crowd cannot be expected during other months of the year.” Although Kartik Fine Arts hosts at least one drama, music and dance show every month, in Margazhi, they conduct a full-fledged arts festival. “Courtesy of the heavy footfall, our festival has a packed line-up of performances from reputed dancers and musicians. We also give away titles and awards to many deserving artists,” he added.
Besides attracting a strong audience, largely dominated by tourists from abroad and across the country, Margazhi also clashes with the holiday period, so people are laid-back and attend programmes in huge numbers, said Karthikeyan, the treasurer of Mylapore Fine Arts Festival. He explained, “Moreover, because it has been the custom for so many years, a pattern has been set, and the organisers and audience just follow it. I feel the minds of people are also tuned to witnessing programmes in the season.”
