A 27-year-old married woman murdered her mother after the latter warned her to end the relationship with a 49-year-old man. The daughter and her lover were arrested on Thursday.
Chennai
The accused was identified as Nandhini, a resident of Meenakshi Amman Nagar in Chromepet. The police said that Nandhini was married to Kannan, a construction worker, 10 years ago. The couple have two children, aged nine and six. The deceased S Boopathi (60) was living with Nandhini, her third daughter.
Nandhini allegedly developed a relationship with Murugan (49) of Chromepet, a mason. Boopathi came to know about the relationship and warned her to forget Murugan. She also threatened Nandhini that she would inform Kannan if she met Murugan again. Following this, Nandhini and Murugan planned to kill Boopathi.
On Monday afternoon, Boopathi was sleeping on the sofa when the sofa caught fire and Boopathi suffered severe burns. She was rushed to the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital but succumbed on Monday night.
Nandhini told the Chromepet police that Boopathi committed suicide by setting herself ablaze. Subsequently, the Chromepet police registered a case under Section 174 of the IPC. However, the autopsy report stated that Boopathi didn’t commit suicide but someone had poured petrol on her and set her on fire.
During investigation, the police found that Murugan used to visit Nandhini’s house regularly. When Nandhini was further grilled, she confessed to the crime. After the inquiry, the police said Nandhini poured petrol on the sofa and burnt it.
She had also planned to kill her husband Kannan by giving him poison. Nandhini told the police that Murugan gave the idea to kill her mother. The police altered the section of the case and arrested Nandhini and Murugan.
