The accused were identified as Imran Khan of Triplicane and Baisuddin of Chintadripet. They were arrested based on the inputs from Rahman Basha, who was arrested a week after the incident. With the recent arrests, the number of persons arrested has increased to seven. The murder happened around 10 pm on May 25, 2018, when M Rangarajan (68), a Tiruchy-based jeweller, was returning after purchasing 500-gram gold from a shop in Sowcarpet. While chasing two men on a two-wheeler who snatched his bag, Rangarajan lost the balance of his two-wheeler and hit a speed breaker in front of CoP’s office in Egmore.

He was rushed to a hospital, but he died without responding to treatments.

The police initially thought it was an accident and the Anna Square traffic investigation police had registered a case. However, after Rangarajan’s son Srinivasan informed the police that Rangarajan’s bag was missing, police found that it was snatched by unidentified persons.

Immediately, the Vepery police registered a case and collected CCTV footage from the area and found that the duo had followed him. One of them, identified as Rajkumar, has several robbery cases pending against him. Police secured him and based on his inputs, they arrested the other accused.
