The victim, Abijith Das (35) of West Bengal is a supervisor in a construction firm. He was staying at a room in a construction site in Villivakkam. Recently, he hired a woman from Odisha Joshna (33) to cook for construction workers. Over a period, Joshna got close to Abijith and noticed that he was handling huge of sums of cash.
Police said that Joshna was in a relationship with one Trilok Chand (40) from Odisha, a construction safety officer. She told Trilok Chand that Abijith usually bring cash to the ICF site on Mondays to distribute salary.
Following this, Trilok Chand hatched a plan to abduct Abijith and rob him. On Monday, he arrived with a gang and kidnapped Abijith in a car. Based on a complaint filed by a worker, the police registered a case and launched a hunt for suspects. On suspicion, police checked Joshna phone and found out that she had frequently called Trilok Chand. However, Joshna did not know where the gang took Abijith.
Meanwhile, Abijith’s phone, which was found in his room, had a message that Rs 20,000 was withdrawn from an ATM in Valasaravakkam. As Trilok Chand’s phone was also traced to the same location, police rushed there and rescued Abijith. After investigation, the police found out that Joshna also helped the gang to execute the plan and also arrested her. The other accused have been identified as Rajeshkumar Das, Jamaludhin, Mitu Kumar Nayak, Rajesh and Saravanan.
“The accused had planned to rob Abijith. However, he had already distributed salaries to the workers and didn’t have any money. So, they made him withdraw money from an ATM and they could not go beyond Rs 20,000 due to limit imposed. They also tried to purchase products online. However, the OTPs were sent to Abijith’s phone which was with the police,” said an officer.
