Apart from reformation of prisoners, TNPHC has also bagged the maintenance of central prisons which was until recently under the prison department control itself. One of the first things TNPHC has initiated is setting up sewage treatment plants at the prisons.

“Earlier, pipes were laid to transfer the sewage water to neighbouring recharge plants and even a small damage in pipes was a big headache for prison authorities. However, five central prisons including Puzhal has its own recharge plant now and sewage water is treated within the prison complex. The treated water is used for cultivation of vegetables in the prison and the excess water is sent to an artificial pool to recharge the ground water. What more, the ponds are auctioned for private parties to grow fish in them for business,” said Kumar.

TNPHC has also extended the sewage treatment plan to its bigger police quarters and the one in Sathyamoorthy Nagar in Avadi has its own treatment plant and the treated water is used to create beautiful gardens around the quarters. “The materials used in the plant are of high quality and is almost maintenance free. If every building has its own recharge plant, problems such as illegal let-out of sewage water into water bodies, ground water deficiency and water scarcity would never arise,” said Kumar.
