In a first, cops book 401 traffic violations based on CCTV footage
If you think you can go scot-free for violating traffic rules when there are no cops present, think again.

For the first time, the city traffic police has booked as many as 401 cases of traffic violations with the help of the CCTV cameras on road.
Termed as Contact-less Traffic Enforcement, the cases were booked for violations on New Year’s eve, said police. Among the cases, 186 were for rash driving, 57 for over-speeding, 16 for tampered silencers and 141 for triple riding.
Actions such as recommending the offenders’ driving licence for suspension, negative remarks during police verification for passport and refusal of conduct certificates for job aspirants will be initiated, said police.
Additional Commissioner (Traffic) A Arun said that footage from more CCTV cameras in other areas are also being scanned and the number of cases booked might go up to 2,000.
“Using the vehicle registration number, we will track the owner’s details and send them an e-challan, to which they will have to respond to,” the Additional Commissioner said.
The official also said that Contact-less Traffic Enforcement will be implemented on a regular basis in the coming days at junctions where traffic police personnel are not present and helmet cases will also be registered.
So far, the city traffic police set up over 10,000 CCTV cameras with the help of private parties in which important junctions on EVR Periyar Salai, Dr Radhakrishnan, Anna Salai, East Coast Road, Poonamalle High Road, GST Road, Jawaharlal Nehru Salai, Rajaji Salai, Wall Tax Road, Basin Bridge Road and 200 Feet Road. Work is on to install CCTV cameras on the remaining roads.
