Highest fatality in 5 yrs: Drunk driving leaves 8 dead in Chennai
Despite police erecting scores of barricades on Chennai’s streets and deploying over 15,000 police personnel, eight drunken revellers were killed and 200 others suffered injuries in mishaps on New Year’s eve on Monday night. The fatality rate is the highest in the last five years.

In Velachery, the deceased Vinoth Kumar (22), a mechanic and Purushothaman (19), a painter, were residents of Adambakkam. Police said the duo were over-speeding on their bike and rammed against a vehicle on 100-Feet-Road. Both died on the spot.
In another accident, an MTC bus ran over a two-wheeler motorist on Kodambakkam High Road at 11 pm. Police said Jayaraman (20), a resident of Tiruvottiyur was riding pillion on a bike driven by Nazer Khan (20) of Valsaravakkam. Their vehicle rammed against another and Jayaraman fell on the road. He was immediately run over by the bus. The cops are examining the CCTV footage to identify the vehicle.
A borewell mechanic Narasimhan (40) of Nerkundram was riding his bike on Maduravoyal-Poonamallee Highway when another bike crashed against his at an inter-section. The rider fled and Narasimhan, who was thrown off his vehicle, suffered major injuries and died. CMBT police have registered a case.
Early on Tuesday, Abilesh, resident of Tondiarpet, rammed into a median while riding on his two-wheeler near Parthasarthy bridge in Old Washermanpet and died.
In Korattur, an inebriated 22-year-old BTech graduate, N Prijesh, from Kilpauk, rammed his bike into a median and was declared brought dead. The incident took place at 3.15 am on Tuesday on Water Canal Road, said Poonamallee traffic investigation police who have registered a case. In Taramani, a 50-year-old labourer was killed after an inebriated man rammed his car into a mini truck at 12.50 am on Tuesday. The deceased, Bhaskar, from Broadway and two others were returning home when a speeding car rammed it from behind near Madhya Kailash. Bhaskar who suffered grievous injuries was rushed to the hospital but was declared brought deadby doctors. Others escaped. The car driver, Shrikant Bari, was arrested by Adyar traffic police and remanded.
Five killed in mishaps during celebrations in Coimbatore
Three people were killed and 50 others injured in mishaps on New Year’s eve in Coimbatore.
The city police said that Niyaz (19), a resident of Gandhi Park and his friend Thanveer (21) from Velandipalayam were returning home in a two-wheeler around 1 am when their vehicle rammed into another bike. The second bike was being driven by 21-year-old Manikandan, who is a resident of Kovilmedu near Velandipalayam. The impact threw all three of them off their vehicles.
They were rushed to Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH), but Manikandan and Niyaz succumbed to their injuries while Thanveer is undergoing treatment.
In another incident, 19-year-old Biju, who was riding a bike, collided with another two-wheeler on Podanur-Vellalore Road while returning home after celebrating New Year with friends. The resident of Rathinapuri was taken to a private hospital where he died without responding to treatment.
In Dharmapuri, two residents of Bandharahalli village died after the two wheeler they were riding on, was hit by a car. K Vinod Kumar (25) and A Srinath (20) died on the spot. The Karimangalam police sent their bodies to Dharmapuri Government Medical College for a post-mortem examination.
No fatalities were reported in Tirupur.
