The accused, John Jaisingh of Washermanpet, has 22 cases, including three murders, pending against him. He was recently released on bail, said the police.
On Monday, passers-by heard cries for help from a well on Chandrasekarapuram Third Street in Ambattur and alerted Fire Services control room. When the personnel rescued him, he told them that he was from a respected family and pleaded with them to not inform the police.
However, as they grew suspicious, the Fire personnel alerted the police. The preliminary investigation revealed that he was one of the three burglars who had tried to escape after people and police spotted them on Sunday morning.
After investigation, the police said that Jaisingh met Suresh of Chetpet and Kamal of Tiruvannamalai in the prison. Together, they decided to burgle locked houses. As per the plan, they broke open a house in Ambattur on Sunday and burgled Rs 10,000.
While they were escaping, passers-by noticed them and alerted a police patrol team but the trio escaped in different directions. Jaisingh, who jumped into the well to escape, was stuck inside as there was no way to climb out of it. On Monday morning, he heard people speaking near the temple and raised an alarm to be rescued.
Jaisingh was taken to Stanley Medical College Hospital for treatment and later remanded in judicial custody.
