For that matter, you don’t have to wait for long at all after the train crosses the next major railway station as from Monday, TTEs in Chennai Railway Division would be able to ascertain berth/seat vacancy and calculate fare in a novel manner.

Hand held terminals would be distributed to TTEs in the division starting Monday. The terminals would not only replace paper charts, but also help download charts and uploaded modified charts after checking. In fact, TTEs would not be able to make excuses like data connectivity while travelling in remote locations as the terminals work in offline mode too. TTEs would be able to work with downloaded chart and mark passengers’ tickets, turned up/not turned up passengers, provide alternate berths/seats and calculate occupations for food and bedrolls. The new terminals would speed up refund and re-allotment of berths/seats as EDR information of “not turned up” passengers and vacancy position would be synchronized with the passenger reservation system, thereby eliminating manual feeding of EDR details to process refunds. Instant updating of information would also enable passengers to get real time information about vacant berths on train at approaching station.

The technology would also help detect fraudulent travels as post-charting cancellations would be sent to the terminals on an hourly basis. Apart from offering transparency, the technology would simplify data retrieval and scrutiny owing to synchronization with PRS.
