Police said the man who did this to V Jayakumar alias Babu, a Class 10 student of a government school in Athipattu, has not been identified, adding that his friends have been picked up for interrogation.

The incident took place around 8 pm when Jayakumar was standing on the terrace of his house at Devi Nagar in Ayapakkam. His father Venu, a construction labourer, was talking to his neighbour when he heard loud cries of Jayakumar.

When Venu and others rushed to the terrace, they found Jayakumar lying in a pool of blood with multiple stab injuries. The teenager was rushed to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital from where he was transferred to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital.

Police said Jayakumar had been stabbed on his chest, abdomen and legs and that doctors performed a surgery on him before moving him to the ward from intensive care unit. Though he is said to be out of danger, police said that he was yet to gain consciousness to give more details on the attack and the perpetrator.

Meanwhile, Tirumullaivoyal police have registered a case and picked up Jayakumar’s friends, all juveniles, for interrogation. Jayakumar’s elder brother Saravanan (17), who works as a house painter, said that he came to know about the attack only when he returned home from work. Their mother, who had gone to Tindivanam, their hometown, rushed to the city on hearing about the incident.

After preliminary inquiry, police said that the man who attacked him, suspected to be around 20 years old, had covered his face and escaped from the spot by jumping into neighbour’s terrace after attacking Jayakumar.

Police also suspect that the teen could have been attacked over a personal enmity and are probing this angle as well, sources said.
