    Vedaranyam youth who posted suicide bid video on FB safe, claim cops

    Eniyavan, the youth from Cyclone Gaja-hit area, who posted a video on Facebook, claiming to have consumed poison on Monday because of ‘harassment’ by police for talking against the government, is safe, police said on Tuesday.

    “He had posted the video to threaten the police. He is the one who caused damages to the vehicle of Nagapattinam superintendent of police during the agitation after Cyclone Gaja hit the region. We have the video in which he was seen damaging the vehicles. His father was remanded in the case. He is a wanted suspect in the case. He is absconding,” a senior police official said.It looks like he posted the video to get the sympathy of the court, sources added.


    Police also noted that after posting a ‘suicidal’ video, another post in FB claimed that he was safe. On Monday, a video footage of Eniyavan from Vedaranyam in Nagapatinam district surfaced on the Facebook. He claimed in the video that he had consumed poison due to police harassment. Eniyavan claimed that he belonged to a farming family and was taking the extreme step allegedly due to police excesses.


    Eniyavan said that police had been chasing him after he spoke to certain TV channel about the inadequate relief measures taken by the government in his native village of Thalainayiru.


    The youth, who claimed he was a graduate, also blamed the police for being pushed to suicide and claimed that he would die in a couple of hours.


    Senior officials had confirmed that he had been booked for vandalism and added that they are in search of the absconding youth.
