Private tankers find 5,000 new water extraction spots

With recent cyclonic systems in the Bay of Bengal raising hopes of stakeholders only to leave them disappointed later, water tanker owners, who have been scouting for new resources to ensure continuous water supply ahead of the lean months, have identified about 5,000 such spots along the city’s peripheral areas.

A confederation of various private tanker associations said that a 10-member committee was formed to identify new water sources. The move was initiated soon after the associations ended their strike in October.

Commenting on the search for new water sources, working president of Tamil Nadu Private Tanker Operators’ Association N Nijalingam said, “Until October, all private tanker lorries were pooling in water from wells and bore wells located at or before Tiruporur, about 45 km from the city. Now, we have identified an additional 5,000 new sources to meet the rising demand. The new places include agricultural wells in fertile farmlands in and around Chengalpattu and beyond.”

Currently, the tanker owners are holding talks with owners of these farmlands and are likely to finalise an agreement before the end of the week. At present, the owners obtain 12,000 litres of water (one load) at an estimated cost of Rs 100.  “The rates depend on the quality of water. We purchase the best quality at a maximum of Rs 150 and not exceeding it,” said a member of the confederation.

The associations comprise water tanker owners who rely on borewells and wells separately. But they have been working together since the crisis emerged. As many as 4,100 water tankers depend on farm wells, while around 4,700 rely on borewells in the peripheries.
