PWD asst engineer booked for amassing Rs 90 lakh in 7 years

DVAC had registered an FIR against R Ramesh, Assistant Executive Engineer in the Public Works Department, Kosathalayai sub-division that has an office at Chepauk.

The case was registered after a preliminary inquiry against him indicated that he had amassed wealth, disproportionate to his known sources of income from September 2010 to August 2017.  “During the inquiry, enough evidence was collected to indicate that there was a commission of a cognizable offence,” the FIR said.

He had allegedly amassed the ill-gotten wealth while he was serving as Assistant Executive Engineer at Vellore tank modernisation sub-division in Vellore, which has its office at Taramani, and upper Palar sub-division at Vellore.

In the beginning of the check period, the officer and his family members possessed properties worth nearly Rs 7 lakh. At the end of the check period, he had properties worth Rs 1.46 crore.

Whereas, the total income of the officer and his wife during the period was Rs 98 lakh and the expenditure and savings were pegged at Rs 49 lakh each. He was in possession of properties worth Rs 1.46 crore and the sleuths has estimated that the suspect had accumulated wealth worth more than Rs 90 lakh during the period illegally, said sources in the DVAC.

A case has been registered against Ramesh under the Prevention of Corruption Act (PCA) last week by the DVAC, as he was a public servant. The case was registered after getting permission from the Vigilance Commissioner, Chennai.
