Private water tankers likely to go on strike again

The private water tankers may go on a strike for the second time this year if the State government fails to hold talks on two major issues – Centre’s new notification on the groundwater extraction and issuance of licenses to the streamline the unregulated industry.

The Confederation of Private Water Tanker Associations will hold a meet this Friday to take a decision on the future course of action. N Nijalingam, President of South Chennai Private Water Tanker Lorry Association, said, “The recent notification will exert pressure on the public. It will certainly affect our business, but that is secondary.”

The Central Groundwater Board (CGWB) of the Ministry of Water Resources had notified last week that the industries, including the packaged drinking water and dewatering units, should obtain a no-objection certificate (NOC) besides making the Central Groundwater Fee (CGF) payment to extract the groundwater. Further, individual households will also have to pay CGF.

The association claims that seizures of tanker lorries have become more frequent. “We wanted the government to grant us licenses and streamline the business to solve this problem,” said a member of the association.

The owners of private water tankers suffered huge losses when they went on an indefinite strike this October. “We tried to reach the government but there was no response. We have no other alternative but to go on a strike,” said Nijalingam.
