    Tension at airport after burglary alarm goes off

    Tension prevailed at the Chennai airport for a while on Sunday afternoon after a car which was parked in the parking area began to sound theft alarm in the domestic terminal.

    On Sunday afternoon the anti-theft alarm of a sedan car went off. The security personnel on duty alerted the airport manager. On suspicion, the airport bomb disposal squad was called in to scan the vehicle as it was parked in the airport for three continuous days. The squad checked the vehicle and confirmed that there was no bombin it.


    Later a car mechanic from Meenambakkam was called for rectifying the fault. Police said there was some problem with the car’s battery, triggering the alarm. Sources said the airport authorities have decided to collect penalty from the car owner, including the service charge.


    Passenger dies mid-air

    A 71-year-old man who was flying to Chennai from Saudi Arabia died in his sleep mid-air on Sunday. He is suspected to have died due to cardiac problems.


    The deceased was identified as Mohamed Sallik from Ammapettai village in Pudukkottai. Police said Mohamed Sallik had gone to Saudi Arabia on pilgrimage along with 14 others from Pudukkottai. The team left to Saudi Arabia 15 days ago and were heading back to Chennai on Sunday on Saudi Arabian Airlines.


    When the flight landed at Chennai around 8.45 pm, Mohamed Sallik was found to be sleeping in his seat. His co-passengers tried to wake him up but there was no response. Based on information from the aircraft, airport manager sent medical team to the spot. However, MohamedSallik had already died by then, sources said.
