“Several projects are being implemented in T Nagar under area-based development (ABD) under Smart City Mission. Under ABD, Rs 75 crore was allocated to provide round the clock water supply in the locality,” Raj Cherubal, Chief Executive Officer of Chennai Smart City Limited said.

Cherubal added that the 24/7 water supply would be provided for seven sq km area by providing smart meters to the houses. “If we prevent wastage of water through leakage, we could provide water for 24 hours. Damaged pipes will be replaced to ensure this,” he said.

Meanwhile, the CMWSSB floated tenders to repair and upgrade pipelines to prevent water loss during transmission in T Nagar area. “The smart meters will be provided after the pipelines are upgraded,” an official said.

Tamil Nadu Water Investment Company (TWIC) had prepared the detailed project report (DPR) for the project. According to the DPR, T Nagar would be segregated into 19 parts and internal pipe connections within each part would be provided.

The CMWSSB is aiming to bring down water loss during the transmission to 25 per cent in three years after the completion of the project. After the project is implemented, the residents of T Nagar would get tap water in their houses and the water consumption would be measured by smart meters. Presently T Nagar gets water only three to four hours a day.

It may be noted that T Nagar is undergoing an overhaul under ABD as the Greater Chennai Corporation is building the pedestrian plaza, multilevel car parking and a new bridge under Smart City Mission. The toilets in T Nagar would also be renovated under the mission.
