“We have conducted an awareness campaign on the ranking at T Nagar on December 5. During the campaign, the residents, especially students were apprised of the ranking process and the importance of citizen participation,” a Corporation official said.

In 2017, Chennai was placed at 235th position. However, the city performed better in 2018 and secured the 100th rank.

Explaining the importance of citizen participation, the official said, “Of the total 5,000 marks in Swachh Survekshan, 1,250 marks will be given based on citizen feedback. In order to increase the marks, we must sensitise the people. During the survey, the first question to the public will be whether they are aware of Swachh Survekshan.”

Meanwhile, the Chennai Corporation, along with the Airport Authority of India, conducted an awareness program at the Chennai Airport on Friday. Such programs were also conducted at Central Railway station and other public places.

“As the Swachh Survekshan team will visit the city in January, such awareness programs will continue. The team will collect citizen feedback door-to-door, through online and mobile application, and over phone. We are trying to perform well and get a higher ranking,” he added.

In 2018, Chennai scored 972 marks under citizen feedback.
