Second day, two cops on duty attacked in city
A constable who was on night duty at a police patrol booth near the Chennai Central railway station, was attacked by five men on Thursday night.

Around 11 pm on Thursday, Senthil Kumar who was at the police booth told three men, who were in an inebriated condition, to move away from there. They argued with the policeman initially, but left after sometime.Â
However, the three men returned around 1 am along with two others and started attacking the constable with stones. They escaped on their bikes leaving the injured constable behind. He was later admitted to the GH for treatment while the Flower Bazaar police have launched a hunt for assailants. The police claimed that they had identified the attackers and would arrest them soon.Â
In another incident of attack on police personnel, a drunk rider attacked a traffic cop with an iron rod, near Sharma Nagar on Thursday night. The police arrested the attacker, B Maran (40) of Vysarpadi.Â
According to police, Kodungaiyur traffic head constable Muthuraman had intervened in a road rage incident between a load auto-rickshaw driver and bike rider Maran. Though both left the place after the police intervened, Maran returned to the spot and attacked Muthuraman with an iron rod. The injured policeman was admitted to hospital. Based on a complaint lodged by Muthuraman, Maran was arrested. Â
Suspect escapes from police stationÂ
A 25-year-old man, who was arrested for his suspected link with red sanders smugglers, escaped from police custody in Tiruvallur district on Thursday night. He was arrested in Pallipet and escaped after he was taken to the police station.Â
The escapee was identified as K Elumalai of Tiruvannamalai. Police said Elumalai was driving a car with other occupants on Thursday night. When the car reached near Podhurpet in Tiruvallur, they saw police involved in a vehicle check. Seeing this, the car driver took another route to avoid the police.Â
But the police personnel noticed this, and alerted another team waiting near Pallipet that intercepted the car. Seeing the police, four men managed to escape, but the driver was nabbed by the police.Â
The police believed that the gang was on their way to Tirupati to smuggle red sanders. The police took Elumalai on a two-wheeler to Podhurpet police station. Immediately after they reached the station, the suspect escaped by giving a slip to the cops.
