    A 13-year-old girl, who was on the way to school, was killed in a road mishap here on Thursday morning.

    Police identified the victim as Jemima Achu Mathew, a Class 8 student hailing from Kerala. Jemima was the daughter of Oomen Mathew, who owns a rubber plantation in the neighbouring state. Mathew had sent his daughter to Chennai to pursue her school education, where she was stayingwith her uncle,Jijan Alex.


    On Thursday, Jemima was heading to school in the morning, riding pillion with her uncle Alex and his daughter, a UKG girl.


    They were on New Avadi Road when a tanker lorry rammed the bike from behind near Canal Street, police said.


    In the impact, Jemima was thrown off the bike and landed in front of the tanker. The rear wheels of the vehicle ran over the girl, killing her onthe spot.


    Jijan Alex and his daughter, who was sitting in the front, escaped without any injuries. Jemima’s body was sent to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
