4-member gang robs man luring him with sexual favours, nabbed

A four-member gang, including two women, was arrested for targeting men travelling alone and robbing them at knifepoint on Monday. Police said that the women would stop motorists and passer-by in guise of soliciting them for commercial sex after which their male partners would enter the scene and rob the victims.

The arrested persons have been identified as Sugumar (25) of Rajamangalam and his partner Varalakshmi (23) and Venkatesh (28) of Alapakkam and his partner Revathi (24).

The victim, Viswanathan (40) of Elavur in Gummidipoondi, is a painting work contractor. Around 2 am on Sunday, Viswanathan was travelling to Porur in a car when a woman intercepted him on the 200-feet road near Retteri on the promise of sexual favours. When he accepted the offer, she reportedly invited one more woman to join them and both of them boarded his car.

When he was about to start the vehicle, two men forcefully entered the car and threatened Viswanathan at knifepoint. They robbed his valuables, including his mobile phone, a gold chain, bracelet and ring. Viswanathan, who escaped from them, spotted a police patrol team on the flyover at Padi and informed them about the incident.

The patrol team immediately rushed to the spot and secured the women. Following this, a team headed by inspector Sivasubbu launched a hunt for the men and secured them late on Sunday. The stolen valuables were recovered from them.

After interrogating them, the police said that Venkatesh and Sugumar were involved in petty crimes. Meanwhile, the women abandoned their husband and joined the duo after which they have been robbing victims in a similar fashion. Though the gang is suspected to have staged several robberies, this the first time they have been caught. “Many people robbed by the gang using this modus operandi would not come forward to file a police complaint,”the police noted.
